The B-BS protocol applied in a odontostomatological department of a Milan hospital
Evidence-Based Safety: Examples of application of scientific methods for the reduction of risk behaviors in health care
Rome, April 29, 2014 – The B- BS protocol , even if applied in its essential elements , is able to produce that improvement in the frequency and quality of the conduct of the health and safety of the operators of hospitals .
The outcome of the trial AARBA – POS conducted at a dental care ward of a hospital in Milan have been communicated by Professor Fabio Tosolin , president of AARBA at the conference “ Analysis of the risks of accidents and working – for the development of instruments and actions aimed at improvement of working conditions “, organized by POS , [ See the program].
Researchers have begun testing AARBA proposing to reduce the growth behavior of hygiene and safety of the operators with the dual aim of – Reduce the number of occupational accidents and diseases health professionals – To reduce the harm to patients (eg, hospital infections , accidental falls )
The surgery at the clinic consisted of these stages
1 ) the definition of target behaviors with the help of doctors, nurses, hygienists and dental assistants ;
2 ) observation and measurement in the field of behavior “safe” and “risky” ;
3 ) provision of feedback to operators observed
Each relevant behavior was measured before and after the intervention , to quantify the improvement generated by the protocol B- BS .
The results show the significant effect of observation and feedback on observed behaviors : for example, the behavior “wash your hands before and after each intervention,” has been pointed out an initial frequency of the department equal to 5 % (4 times out of 74) ; after 4 weeks of treatment the frequency is increased to 42 of 56 , equal to 75 % .
87% of behaviors “at risk” in the use of gloves in the staff of preservation , such as touch drawers, your computer, your chair … and after the surgery has been reduced to 26% , with a decrease then 61% ; or even the already virtuous behavior of the staff of hygienists , who has a 88 % of correct use of the mask rises further up to 93% during the last two weeks of intervention.
Finally, the instrument of the checklist has allowed a functional analysis of the causes that have led operators to risky behavior ; for hand washing , for example , 61% of risk-taking behavior is analyzed due to a lack of motivation among the operators , the main factor that the process of B- BS shall accrue 19% of the risk behaviors analyzed are due to deficiencies structural organization which can put shelter, how to obtain a less abrasive soap for hands or buy the lenses appropriate use of the curing light , as reported by the operators observed
